Would you like to give a talk to other Rest Less members?

Hello Rest Less Community!

People keep telling us that in these socially distanced times, they would love to engage more with others on the community so we thought we would try a few things out.

Recognising the talent and experience of everyone in the Rest Less Community – we thought we would ask if anyone has a passion or a special interest that they would be interested in giving a free talk on, to other members of the Rest Less community?

It could be on anything that you think might be of interest to others, from Dinghy Sailing to Napoleonic History, or from Astronomy to Arts and Crafts…. And the talk could be anywhere between 10 to 45 minutes long.

We will then prioritise some initial trial talks and organise the logistics and scheduling for the talks over video conference…. We would like to host as many as possible, but do forgive us if we are unable to host every talk suggestion received.

If you’re interested in offering a talk to others on the community please email us at [email protected] or direct message us with the proposed topic of your talk…

We’d also love to hear what you think of the idea in the comments below….

Hello – I would be happy to offer a talk on ” teaching as a second career – ” I was thinking that there are a lot of people on here who are very experienced in either teaching or commerce and may enjoy a new part time career in teaching English to foreign students of all ages and all levels. This teaching can be done on line or when possible you host an individual student in your home for say, 1 week, 2 weeks and teach them each morning. Its incredibly rewarding this type of the programme. Well, its just a thought – I could talk about what it entails – the good qualifications and the ones which are not worth dust and the pitfalls and the satisfaction. This can also encompass volunteering to teach in Cape Town where we support a local High School and Township. This Township also needs people to teach skills ; painting; gardening; reading; etc etc

Whoever told you that should be shot ( am I allowed to say that now in our Woke Society?) A lot of my best ” teachers” have retired or recently qualified. Dont listen to them – just go for it. My students really enjoy older tutors who seem to have more time for them

          Hi Kenny,

Many thanks for your comments and indeed as Dolphin says, just go for it!

Please, do try and start from our job search section, https://restless.co.uk/jobs/find-a-job, use keywords such as “teach”, “teaching”, “lecture”, “lecturer” etc. and also play with the location and see what results you get.

          Hope that helps.

Hi , I think this is a fabulous idea . In these socially distanced times a video is more engaging and personal than reading a lot of text.
I would be happy to present a talk on “The benefits of Pilates “
I could then offer a short session on the lateral breathing technique used in Pilates . As we all know Covid attacks the lungs , this breathing technique improves lung function and can be done anywhere at any time .

I’m a bit too shy in terms of speaking publicly as it were, but would be happy to listen to any talks of interest.

This is an excellent idea. I would be happy to offer a talk on ‘Starting your own business when you are 50+’ as I think there would be a lot of interest.

I’d be more than happy to do talks on various aspects of art/painting/drawing and could do it as a combined talk and demo, just a talk, or just a demo – with the demos people could just watch or follow along with me. Talks/demos can be on aspects of art history, on the practice and techniques of drawing in pencil or pastel, or painting in watercolours or acrylics with subjects ranging from landscapes/cityscapes/street scenes to still life, flowers or portraits.

I would be very happy to give a talk. As an ex police officer subjects such Psychopaths or Serial Killers work well. I know lots of people are interested in crime and forensics. My husband and I have turned it into a business but happy to do it for fun for people in this group.

What a great idea. I am a newly retired teacher in Animal Management. My specialist areas are animal training – I own and train my own birds of prey and owls, wildlife rehabilitation and ecology, or something as simple as ‘how to care for your pets’. I would be more than happy to give a talk on any of these subjects – or anything animal related, particularly birds.

I have emailed back some of you and for everybody’s benefit, just a quick update on where we are here.
We are currently collating all the interests we have received so far, quite a few and that’s brilliant, and we should be able to get back to you with more information soon.
Thanks again this is very very exciting!!

Happy to give a talk on corresponding – letter writing – penpalling. I run a penpal club with members all over the world and publish a quarterly magazine. Have travelled the world meeting penpals and attended conferences, conventions and get-togethers. Never happier than when writing a letter!

I like that. Wonderful that writing letters still exist. How do you get hold of this magazine and maybe even get a penpal? Had a few in my youth and would like to start writing again.

I had no idea that penpals were still a thing – do you actually write letters instead of emailing? I used to spend hour upon hour letter writing.

Colin …. there’s a MASSIVE world of penpals everywhere! There are magazines, special events like whole months designated to writing to penpals such as InCoWriMo (google it!) going on write (!) now during February. I have around 50 penfriends as well as connecting with everyone in my magazine (called Rainbows – see Rainbows Penpal Club on Facebook) Most people write proper letters on paper with pen and ink – yes, how strange!! Some do emailing for speed and it’s cheaper but there’s nothing like the excitement of a REAL letter landing on your doormat – one you can settle down in a comfy chair and read with a nice cup of tea! If you are interested, I’ll send you more info on Rainbows. Marjorie

Hello, I suffer from sever Schizophrenia, anxiety and depression. And after a terrific life changing experience, I went to a Physchartric hospital, at the age of 21 and was finally allowed back into the community at the age of 38. I’m 52yrs now and live alone, with my cat.
Anyway, that’s my life in basic terms, but I’m really leaving out a lot of the details. And I used to give talks to A-level students at Alton college, about my life experiences.
These talks turned out to be very popular with the students and, I ended up doing them for 4yrs. I left due to health issues several years ago and, the students wrote me a lovely thank you letter which I have kept.
So I was wondering if you would be interested in me doing a similar thing for you??

I would like to see how the first talk goes , as I have done a couple of talks a while ago to alcohics and a couple in rehabilitation centers
So if this were to go alright then yes why not.
Could be that a follow up session with questions and thought s on the subject.
