Top 10 films

Just a bit of fun. In truth, you cant answer this becasue it changes with your mood. In these challenging times it’s quite an interesting thing to do with family and friends.
Here goes to be shot down
1) Went the Day Well
2) The Third Man
3) Life is beautiful
4) A beautiful mind
5) The Searchers
6) Lives of Others
7) Bad Day at Black Rock
8) The Day the Eath Stood Still(original)
9) My Cousin Vinny
10) Saving Private Ryan

As i say- if i made a list tomorrow it would be different -but they are all excellent films

Andy some great films on your list, but please explain to me the lasting appeal of 2001 A Space Odyssey – an interesting curiousity, but good enough to go top of the list?

Ah my list wasn’t in any order just 10 of the best. 2001 is a classic of course but Blade Runner and The Matrix would rank above it. And as others have said, if I was doing it again today I’d probably swap a few. It’s all a matter of opinion of course but I’ve never understood why Shawshank Redemption features in so many peoples lists

Some unusual choices in there, like The Time Machine and The Others, but they’re nonetheless great films and often overlooked for best film lists. Prometheus too, better than Alien? Interesting!

Prometheus is such a fascinating concept – great film. But the alien films….nooooo – i have watched half watched them snd with great difficulty…too much blood and gore for me.

Yes, certainly plenty of shocking scenes and no mistake. I just love the mythology to it. Prometheus was flawed, but it is still a great film with some terrific concepts.

HG Wells wrote a great book – the time machine and for its time it was quite advanced/ forward thinking. The film has always fascinated me – the mannequin in the shop window and how the fashion changed…. I think Wells made some interesting predictions about society in the film – the people in that place in the future who show no emotion… are we as a human race slowly going that way – thinking only about ourselves rather than others…🤔 A lot of the youngens today are very much into themselves – ‘it’s all about me and me only and I can do whatever I like and I don’t care who I hurt’ seems to be the culture.
There’s another part in the film When he’s in that place and he’s looking through a book and it just disintegrates and falls apart in his hands… Makes me think of our time – paper books are already becoming a thing of the past as we rely more and more on technology and the internet and things like kindle. I think HG Wells touched on some interesting things, particularly his predictions on travel.

Yes, he was a wonderful writer, (from my home town!). Considering The Time Machine was his first novel, and it’s really quite slender, it’s a terrific story. I agree there is a lot of symbolism. The 1960 film is wonderful, the idea of using the mannequin is a brilliant shorthand. Wells was certainly very prophetic, I supposed he thought a lot about the future and where humanity was headed.

Pop Quiz. There were 2 movie versions of “The Time Machine”. 1960 and 2002, besides the plot what did they have in common?

Both lead actors are Australian. Rod Taylor 1960 and Guy Pearce 2002. Granted, you would probably have to be Australian to notice. I do like the Rod Taylor version also.

I haven’t numbered mine because I like a movie dependent on my mood. I have listed ones that I repeatedly watch but not in any particular order. I don’t enjoy rom coms or chick flix much anymore. I like action / drama.
