Would have been 11 then, so out with my mates I guess. Summer of 76 I do remember well, was such a hot one. Don’t think I spent a day indoors ! 😊

I think the pipe is Sherlock Holmes loves the colour purple

reliquit 26th January 2022 at 1:47 pm
I smoked a pipe for a quite a few years – until I took a job where I was driving most of the day (pipe smoking while driving is both impractical and potentially dangerous).

Is that a hilman imp? You were cool matey👍🏻
-
reliquit 1st February 2022 at 10:00 pm
It was something of an oddity. Basically a Hillman Imp but it was badged as a Sunbeam. Nothing particularly unusual about that as the Imp was badge-engineered in a few different guises. However it was the only one I ever saw with Sunbeam badging that was the standard Imp shape – all the other Sunbeams I ever saw were the fastback “Californian” styling like the one in this photo (which was also available badged as a Singer Chamois)

You Bare foot 😂 I think you were born with a pair of shoes 😂

Always 25th January 2022 at 6:50 pm
Actually I did not have a pair of shoes until I started school at 5 years old! I think that is probably why I love them so much now

I was 11 too. Spending the summer hols out all day either with friends, or over the woods and fields, or on one of my multiple trips every week to the library. I was no doubt bereft as Jon Pertwee’s Doctor Who had succumbed to the poison of the Queen of the Spiders on 8th June, regenerating into the imposter Tom Baker and taking a huge chunk of my childhood with him. Ahead lay secondary school, the loss of innocence, storm clouds and social ills.

I wish you’d picked another year. The summer of ’74 was … awful. I’d just broken up with the person that, with hindsight, proved to be the love of my life, and I was at rock bottom. I rode my motorcycle down to northern Spain, hoping a change of scenery might improve things, but it didn’t work. On the way I lost all my camping gear and had to resort to improvising in camp sites – see the picture. I was sleeping in that arrangement one night when a thunderstorm flash flooded the campsite and I very nearly drowned, only surviving because of the kindness of three strangers. The PTSD from that year is still with me.

A bad year, but that was just the luck of the draw in picking ’74. I’m sure we all have them.

Still at school but spent the summer working as a delivery boy for the local ice-cream factory. We use to deliver ice-cream to campsites, cafes etc across many parts of Cornwall.

I was 10 so at school but In my free time I’d either be at the nearby farm helping out , or at my friend’s house, or we would all be down the village meeting up with our mates or on a bike ride and a lot of fishing four of us used to do a lot together me, my best mate, his sister and my sister.
And often on a Saturday I’d join my grandad in his milk tanker going round the farms collecting the milk

Lots of answers. Sharron can I ask why you specifically picked on 74?….and not say 67 (summer of love :)), summer of 69 (Bryan Adams thought it was pretty special), 76 (because it was bloody hot), 77 (the punk summer) etc etc 🙂
-
SharronE 31st January 2022 at 5:13 pm
74 was the year they put a play centre in where I lived…. Probably should have said that, I was in the local paper
-
Linpap 31st January 2022 at 6:36 pm
Did you know that Bryan Adams was only nine in 69? He chose that year for his song because for some unknown reason he thought the date sounded good…

I dont recall what I was exactly doing in the summer of 74, but it was probably very similar to the other summer’s around it – a caravan holiday down south or to Wales, catching butterflies in the garden and letting them go, playing hop-scotch or skipping in the street, playing hide and seek in the cornfields, going to the park down the road, building dens in the ditch, pretending to be mum – making mud pies and washing my teddies clothes and hanging them up on the branch of the Apple tree to dry. Great memories 😊
