I don’t know why it popped into my head but I just remembered a drink I used to love called Bezique. Sadly it is no longer made. What was your favourite drink 30 years ago?

Any gentleman out there remember Ben Trueman?
-
RobC 19th May 2021 at 2:54 pm
Ben Truman – brewed from 1666 until 1989. Re-established in 2010: https://www.trumansbeer.co.uk/about-us/

Dreamyboy 19th May 2021 at 9:17 pm
Thanks for that Rob – my drink of choice when I first started frequenting pubs, became a lager drinker over time.

Absolutely , I used to drink in what was, back in the day, the Castle Pub in the Old Kent Rd, Ben Trueman would be drunk with a bottle of Courage light ale , making a pint of light & bitter. oh, they were the days .

in my late teens/early 20’s i worked as a barman for extra cash , & i loved the old snowballs in a bottle. didn’t like the taste , but whenever i served one i’d have a good sniff of the bottle after , customers thought i was nuts 😀

Remember the days when a bottle of Mateus Rosé with the basket on the bottom was the height of sophistication!
-
Deleted User 19th May 2021 at 7:25 pm
Around the time of chicken in a basket?
-
Andy Paddles 19th May 2021 at 8:18 pm
And well done steak at the local Berni Inn!
-
-
Mary A 21st May 2021 at 4:59 am
My mum always bought this for dinner parties. Out came the Edinburgh Crystal glasses too……. dead posh like! When the Mateus Rose was placed on the table it was definitely time to be sophisticated or you’d get the glare!! 😄

Ah! The Look – the one that only a Mother can give!
To the casual observer – just a sweet smile, to those in the know – why I oughtta…..
😉
-
Mary A 21st May 2021 at 7:45 am
Ha ha, yes, you must have a mum like mine. 😂 I wonder if she’s a Scot! 🤔
-
Andy Paddles 21st May 2021 at 10:55 am
She is indeed! A Glasgow girl – not lived there for 50 years, but you know what they say,
You can take the girl out of Glasgow, but…

And for anyone who’s ever spent any time North of the Border – cremola foam and a bottle of buckies!
Not in the same glass, although on reflection, not so different from a Jaeger Bomb!
-
George W 19th May 2021 at 7:46 pm
Buckfast and another cheeky wee number called El Dorado were/still are the drink of choice for the youth of Glasgow .
Creamola Foam made a come back a couple of years ago but tastes nothing like the original …..might be the effect of “Buckie” on the taste buds all these years ago !.
-
Andy Paddles 19th May 2021 at 8:17 pm
George, I heard that cans of original Irn Bru (pre recipe change – full fat, with more e numbers than you can shake a stick at) were selling for stupid money on ebay and similar!
I guess that’s what happened to Cremola Foam – take the 1970s magic out it and what have you got left – fizzy water!

-
Mary A 21st May 2021 at 5:09 am
Virtually lived on that stuff! Pure sugar though….. what was my mum thinking!
-
Andy Paddles 21st May 2021 at 6:23 am
I didn’t know there was a lot of sugar in Buckies Mary A! 😉

Black Russian cocktail a classic black Russian cocktail is made with a vodka coffee liqueur and cola garnish with a Maraschino cherry 🍒
My favourite cocktail 🍹✅
-
Poisson Bracket 20th May 2021 at 8:23 pm
White Russians are good too. I’m a big fan of creamy cocktails; brandy Alexander is a good one.
-
Strot62 21st May 2021 at 11:48 am
Black Russian was my tipple late teens. Moved on to Southern Comfort and lemonade in my 20s. Glass or two of Baileys at Christmas.
-
SouthernSoftie 25th May 2021 at 11:28 pm
I used to drink this when in the States but without the coke
-
-
J3nny64 19th May 2021 at 9:51 pm
Dubonnet and lemonade 😋
Vodka and lime 🤢-
Sandyg 21st May 2021 at 4:35 am
Dubonnet&lemonade’s still my favourite drink, I get a bottle for Xmas every year, its a harder search each time to as so hard to find.
-
Jenny Tew 21st May 2021 at 6:58 am
Me too! Nice with bitter lemon too. I couldn’t find it anywhere last Christmas
-
Sandyg 21st May 2021 at 1:42 pm
Next time I see it, I will stockpile several bottles !
I always ask for it in Bars, hoping to encourage them to seek it out .. -
Jenny Tew 21st May 2021 at 8:33 pm
Waitrose was normally my go to but they didn’t seem to stock it. Maybe I should start a country-wide tour of off-licences. 🙂
-

You can actually buy it on a well known website named after a river….

A girl after my own heart! Cheers!

I had such a liking for Blue Bols and lemonade when I was training that the hospital social club added it to the Optics! Perhaps if hospitals still had their own bars, hospital budgets would be healthier – although staff health might suffer as a consequence!!
-
Deleted User 20th May 2021 at 12:10 am
I remember pubs.
Not sure how I’m going to explain their popularity to my grandchildren. -
Christobel 20th May 2021 at 1:26 pm
I don’t know that one but remember Biarritz, Dry Martini & lemonade, snakebite and brandy & babycham. Yuk! Happily I have grown up since then!
-

Tequila with the salt and lemon, could never bring myself to eat the worm at the bottom of the bottle though, Stunning blue flaming Sambuca with the coffee beans , Raki (pernod in flavour) in a Turkish Restaurant , hearing me order once, the Chef came out , shook my hand and joined us for a couple of glasses. A Whiskey drinker really, although I only tend to have a little tipple when I’m cooking, Too many favourites to list but I do enjoy a 12 year old malt called Aberlour.
-
Deleted User 20th May 2021 at 8:59 pm
Sambuca yes please
Raki I’ve had that at a friend’s house and of course Tequila shots
Feeling drunk 🥴 already and I haven’t had a drink yet 😂 -
Deleted User 23rd May 2021 at 8:01 pm
If its got the worm 🪱it’s mezcal. I did get to the worm at the bottom…….
So they tell me 🤔
🤫but I don’t remember 😕

-
Sandyg 21st May 2021 at 4:28 am
Another you cant get any more, but probably longer than 30 years since they stopped making it, as it was the 1st alcoholic drink I enjoyed in my teens.. BIARRITZ. and also…PONY
-
Sandyg 21st May 2021 at 4:37 am
And I drank Babysham often yet Now it gives me an instant, intense headache, so can’t touch it, which is a shame as they brought it back out
-
Sandyg 21st May 2021 at 4:38 am

-
Anonymous User (no longer active) 21st May 2021 at 4:54 am
I have some drinks that can stay in the past and never to be drunk again….pernod, southern comfort, carlsberg special brew and colt 45……all evil stuff.
-
Mary A 21st May 2021 at 5:18 am
Pina Colada!! Just reminds me of party nights in Magaluf and being young and daft. Oh, and massive jugs of Sangria too with brightly coloured straws…. free for all! Happy days!!
-
Oracle06 21st May 2021 at 6:41 am
Drink of choice in my younger days was snakebite and black (looked like you were drinking a pint of blood), cherry b and cider or Malibu and pineapple don’t think I would drink any of them nowadays.
These days I’m more of a cider girl plus love a good rosè wine but when on holiday abroad it’s Sangria or Cocktails depending where I am in the world.-
Sandyg 22nd May 2021 at 1:03 pm
exactly same as me then ! I drink cider any day I’m not working, and love arose and White Wine- but won’t open a bottle as I live alone and am afraid I’d not be able to resist emptying the bottle ! A can or bottle of cider is fine But yes, Sangria and cocktails on holidays !

Heard a pub owner on the tv on ‘Freedom Day’ say how pleased he was that things could go back to normal and his establishment could stop table service – Whoopee! Back to being ignored at the bar, while the youth get served in front of us again😭
