I personally can’t stand the smell of chrysanthemums but my dad grew them as a hobby and they always make me think of him. He won a competition with a yellow one and had his photo in the localnewspaper holding a 12 ins ruler across the head of the flower!

I too have chrysanth memories. I worked at RHS Wisley many years ago in the glasshouses and my boss loved them. I had to spend hours dis-budding them so the remaining buds could flower in perfection for display. I so don’t like them now.
Freesias were my Mum’s favourites so hold a special place in my heart.-
Carol.L 28th April 2021 at 9:56 pm

Daffodils – one of my Mam’s favourites (and mine). She would always buy some as soon as possible after the Christmas decorations came down in January and keep buying them til the shops ran out of stock in April. I’ve kept up the tradition since she died in 2017 and offered up a silent “sorry, Mam” when I couldn’t find any until late January this year due to lockdown, but I did quite well until mid April.

Same here – my dad grew them as a hobby (he grew all sorts) and I will visualise him pottering about in the garden whenever I see chrysanthenums.

Tulips, always remind me of my mom, she had loads of them in the garden. Beautiful red and yellow. When she was in the mid stages of dementia she dug them all up and said they were weeds and gave them to me. I had them for years and then I dug them up to move house and the mice in the garage ate them all. I was gutted. They always flowered on her birthday 18 April.
Recently found some just like them and they are flowering now .-
Carol.L 29th April 2021 at 6:02 pm
Aw. I’m so glad you’ve been able to replace them Josie and keep your mum’s memory alive.
-
Josie The Black Country Wench 29th April 2021 at 6:05 pm
Yeah it was wonderful to find some that were both yellow and red. Just being in the garden when all the flowers are in bloom always reminds me of mom. She loved her garden, taught me all I know about gardening.

Gladioli was my grandmas favourite and I have put some in the ground this year – first time ever – no idea whether they will take.
Daffodils were given to my mum on the anniversary of dads death in March by a friend. I thought it was because they were in season – but actually realised, just this year, it was because he was welsh 😳 through a child’s eye I hadn’t associated it!

I haven’t seen gladioli for years Gill, isn’t it funny how even flowers come and go into popularity? Love the daffodil story, what a thoughtful gesture….and love the new you!

… I know.. well Barry Humphries of course was the glad guy… At one time no bouquet was complete with out Glads .. so I guess that is a reason Grandma liked them so much. I do hope they come up, but I wonder whether it will be next year. The cold nights this last month have slowed everything down, so I wait to see.

Wild primroses, my aunt had some in her garden and when I was younger would allow me to take a posy of them home. The first time I visited where my best friend was buried the churchyard was full of them. I took it as a sign.

I love sweet peas and I know it is not a flower but tomato plants….my mum was so proud of hers in the green house. It means summer is here too !

Primroses for the memories of a precious time growing up with my Nana and Great Aunt in their home, Primrose Bank. The gated entrance had a grass bank on both sides which is Spring was a riot of primroses. Alternatively not a flower but a plant, Amaryllis, which I always put in my late Mum’s stocking every year. Sadly she’s no longer here but I carry on the tradition and buy one for her each Christmas so I have the pleasure of ‘sharing’ it with her.
